1858 Morgan Township House

The 1858 Morgan Township House features exhibits displaying historic artifacts such as photographs, newspaper articles, and more, that tell the story of Morgan Township.

1910 Museum

This century-old building in Monroe has a long and varied history including a general store, a soda fountain, a dress shop, and now being the home to the Monroe Historical Society. Discover the history behind this long-beloved establishment and learn more about Monroe.

Black Covered Bridge

Built in 1869, the Black Covered Bridge in Oxford spans Four Mile Creek and is the only covered bridge in Butler County remaining in its original location. The Black Covered Bridge was originally known as the Pugh's Mill Bridge, in association with nearby grist and saw mills built by J.B. Pugh.

Butler County Courthouse

One of Butler County's foremost active landmarks, this grand four-story structure in Hamilton was built between 1885 and 1889 with Corinthian columns and a mansard roof. The iconic Italianate-style courthouse originally featured a four-part clock tower, which was replaced after a fire in 1912.

Butler County Historical Society - Benninghofen House

The Benninghofen House in Hamilton portrays the lifestyle of a prominent businessman and his family during the latter 19th century, as Hamilton developed into an industrial center. Built in 1861, original architectural details remain throughout the interior of this building and offers a wonderful glimpse into the past.

Butler County Veterans Memorial

This memorial sits in Veterans Park in Hamilton and contains over 700 names of local Armed Services heroes from World War I to present day. This park features a retired Howitzer Cannon.

Butler County Warbirds Museum

The Butler County Warbirds Museum provides a glimpse into many fascinating stories and over 1,800 artifacts ranging from the Civil War to present day in a historic Middletown Hangar. Most of the heroes and veterans that are featured in the museum are from Butler County.

Canal Museum

The Canal Museum is located on the route of the Miami-Erie Canal, which was operational from 1825 to 1929. The museum, a replica of a lock tenders house, presents history through artifacts, photographs, and videos of the Miami-Erie Canal and the early industry of Middletown.

The Chickahominy House in Monroe was replicated from the Old Chickahominy House in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia and was designed to showcase the interior of a modern home from the late 1890s to early 1900s with fully furnished period pieces donated by Monroe families.

Chrisholm MetroPark Historic Farmstead

Built in 1874, this farmstead in Trenton was the home of one of the leading families of the Amish-Mennonite settlement that existed in the early 19th century. The Chrisholm Historic Farmstead, now a park within MetroParks of Butler County, is a remnant of a once thriving Amish agricultural community.

Chrisholm MetroPark is open dusk to dawn. The Augspurger House is only open during scheduled events and every third Sunday of the month from April to October.

Dayton Lane Historic District

From the 1870s until the 1890s, the Dayton Lane Historic District became the neighborhood of choice for Hamilton’s industrial barons who sought to out-build one another. Their contests resulted in a diverse set of styles and over 200 impressive homes passersby still marvel at today.

DeWitt Log Homestead

The log house of Zachariah Price DeWitt, built in 1805, is the oldest remaining structure in Oxford, and is the last of the pioneer homesteads established along the Four-Mile Creek before the town of Oxford or Miami University even existed.

Elisha Morgan Farm Mansion

The Elisha Morgan Farm Mansion, built in 1817, stands as a treasured historic landmark in Fairfield. It has been determined that the house, a Flemish bond brick mansion, was constructed in three stages. The home's interior includes an open stairway, beaded fireplace mantels, fluted wood work, and original wood floors.

Freedom Summer Memorial

This outdoor memorial in Oxford commemorates the brave civil rights workers who trained on the campus of The Western College for Women in preparation for registering voters in Mississippi during the summer of 1964. Dedicated in 2000, the memorial can be seen around the side of Kumler Chapel, and three trees were planted to honor the lives of the three volunteers who tragically lost their lives.

German Village Historic District

German Village is a nine-block historic district and was the first residential development outside of Fort Hamilton. By the 1940s, with the completion of a nearby hydraulic canal, a wave of German immigrants had arrived and Hamilton was becoming a prominent industrial center.

Governor Bebb MetroPark Pioneer Village

Governor Bebb MetroPark in Okeana features a historical pioneer village, which includes the log house birthplace of William Bebb, Butler County native and Ohio's nineteenth governor. The MetroPark is 264 acres of forest and thriving native wildlife — complete with nature trails and a covered bridge from the 1800s.

Gregory Log Cabin at Dudley Woods Park

The Gregory Log Cabin was home to one of Liberty Township's early pioneer families and is the site of educational programming. The cabin was moved from its original location along Gregory Creek and reconstructed in the park.

Highlands Historic District

The Highlands Historic District in Middletown was created to preserve the historical architecture and memory of those who lived in this neighborhood since its beginning. In 1894, Charles T. Goldman and his father purchased land on the east end of Middletown that would become The Highlands with the intention of creating a subdivision for the employees of Armco.

Hueston Woods State Park Pioneer Farm Museum

The Hueston Woods Pioneer Farm Museum in Oxford has three buildings: The 1836 Doty Homestead, the former Oxford Township Trustees Building, and an 1840s dairy barn. The historic home contains late nineteenth century furnishings, pottery, porcelain, quilts, and other textiles.

Hughes Schoolhouse

Built in 1887, the Hughes School House in Liberty Township functioned as a learning space for first through eighth graders until 1922. The school is furnished today just as it was in 1887.

Karl E. Limper Geology Museum

The Karl E. Limper Geology Museum in Oxford holds a collection of minerals, meteors, and fossils to teach visitors to appreciate geological concepts and spark curiosity.

Keehner Park Cabin in the Clearing

This 1833 log cabin was dismantled, relocated and rebuilt from pieces of two salvaged cabins — one originally from Preble County and the second from West Chester. Today, the one-room cabin continues to educate the community about pioneer life.

Lane Hooven House

This rare, restored octagonal home was once the home of a prominent Hamilton industrialist, and is one of only 400 octagonal structures in the United States. Built in 1863, the Victorian Gothic home is highlighted with ornate details and a unique spiral staircase.

McGuffey House and Museum

The McGuffey House and Museum in Oxford honors William McGuffey, who compiled the McGuffey Eclectic Readers. A professor of Ancient Languages and Moral Philosophy at Miami University, McGuffey built this two-story brick house in 1833 and lived there until 1836. The museum exhibits materials relating to his life, and the history of literacy and schooling.

The Monroe Pioneer Log Cabin, built in the 1800's, is located in Monroe Community Park. The one-room cabin features pioneer furnishings as it would have when Monroe resident, Elmer Ellsworth, was born in the cabin in the 1890s.

Monument Cabin is an early 1800s log cabin restored on the site of old Fort Hamilton along the bank of the Great Miami River. The cabin is furnished with pieces to reflect the early pioneers of Butler County. Located directly next to the Soldiers, Sailors, and Pioneers Monument.

Muhlhauser Barn

One of the region’s earliest and largest breweries was the Muhlhauser-Windisch Brewing Company, whose legacy can still be felt and seen today. One of their original barns from their property stands with pride at the front entrance of Beckett Park in West Chester, known as the Muhlhauser Barn. It was removed from the original Fairfield site to save a piece of history.

Rossville Historic District

Rossville was founded in 1804 as a separate city from Hamilton. Throughout the 19th century, Rossville was known for its inns, taverns, breweries, and industry. The town joined Hamilton in 1854 and served as a valuable refuge during the great flood of 1913. The architecture of Rossville and Main Street provides excellent examples of all of the major styles of domestic and commercial buildings from the 1830s through the 1920s.

The Salty Dog Museum takes visitors through the evolution of automobile transportation in this Shandon museum. Featuring dozens of well-kept cars and firetrucks from the early 1900s which have been restored to their natural glory, this must-see museum tells the story of the automobile like never before!

Soldiers, Sailors, and Pioneers Monument

This historic monument stands at the site of Fort Hamilton, right along the banks of the Great Miami River. It honors those who have fought and served our country as well as those who first settled in Butler County. Notable features of the monument are the gorgeous stained glass windows and a temple dome that holds a 17-foot bronze statue, "Billy Yank," raising his cap in celebration of victory in the 4 year war.

Sorg Opera House

The historic Sorg Opera House in Middletown has been welcoming guests for performances and spectacles since 1891. Due to a fire in 1935, the Sorg Opera House temporarily shut down but has since been revitalized and reopened for performances.

South Main Street Historic District

The South Main Street Historic District has over 80 houses and buildings constructed mostly in the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s, with some dating back to the early 1800’s. Many of Middletown’s most prominent citizens built their homes on South Main, including Middletown’s first settler.

Station Road Schoolhouse

Orginially built in 1875, but was lost to a fire in 1900, the Station Road School House in West Chester is a large two-room school built to accommodate the growing numbers of students in the area. Grades one through four were housed in one room, while grades five through 8 were in the other room. This is the only two-room schoolhouse in Butler County.

The Hammond House Museum

The Hammond House Museum in Reily Township was once home to the Hammond family, and is now home to many artifacts dating back to the early 1800s. Reily Township features many historical buildings and sites, including the original inn and cemeteries where veterans from the Revolutionary War and the Civil War were put to rest.

The Shartle House

The Shartle House in Middletown was built in 1895 and housed many different owners over the years. At one point, it served as the Women's Center and the Girls Club and currently houses the Middletown Historical Society. The museum displays several historical exhibits, and the small auditorium has been utilized for programs on local, regional, and global history.

The Upper Mill Creek Conservation Corridor

This wetland park follows the Mill Creek and the former Miami Erie Canal. The West Chester park features a paved three-mile Port Union Canal Trail, which passes the ruins of a canal aqueduct, the foundation of an icehouse, and ice ponds. Discover a variety of flora and fauna, at this park that's great for bird watching and nature exploration.

University Historic District

Oxford's University Historic District is the only district that was comprised almost entirely of residential architecture. The nine-blocks covers most of what was originally the University Square, including 33 sites that remind and inform visitors of the significance of the area in the development of the city of Oxford.

Veterans Memorial at Heroes Park

The granite monuments that serve as as the entrance to Heroes park, recognize each branch of service, etched with a patriotic scene on one side. The memorials serve to honor the sacrifices made by armed forces.

Veterans Memorial Middletown

The granite Veterans Memorial inside Woodside Cemetery in Middletown is a tribute to veterans from the Mexican War up to the Air Assault in Operation Enduring Freedom. This 16 panel curved masterpiece measures 54 feet long by 8 feet high and is laser etched with the work of renowned artist, Mort Kunstler.

The Veterans Memorial Park in Fairfield features a granite monument, "Tears for the Fallen," signifying tears shed for the fallen men and women of war, and a life-size bronze sculpture depicting a war veteran. Veterans Memorial Park also has a path of remembrance, engraved with the names of loved ones who have served in all branches of the armed forces.

The former home of the Voice of America Bethany Station in West Chester features displays relating to broadcast history in the region, the development of radio technology, and ongoing amateur radio communications. First operational in 1944, the Voice of America Bethany Station once housed advanced radio communication technology, playing a pivotal role in history during World War II and the Cold War.

The Western College for Women Historic District in Oxford began as a private college in 1855 and was in operation until 1974 when Miami University purchased the property.
